Yarn & care
Hand-crocheted cotton lasts for years if you treat it kindly. Here is everything worth knowing.
The yarn we use
We choose the yarn to suit the piece, so it varies from one item to the next. Most are worked in mercerised cotton - strong, breathable, and it holds stitch definition without the halo that wool develops. Warmer pieces use a blend instead. Whatever a piece is made from is listed on its product page.
We buy in small lots from a single supplier so colours stay consistent between orders.
Washing
Hand wash in cold water with a little mild detergent. Do not rub, twist or wring. Crochet fabric is a chain of loops, and twisting distorts it permanently.
Press the water out between two towels instead.
Drying
Always dry flat, out of direct sunlight. Hanging a wet crochet garment will stretch it several centimetres and it will not recover.
Reshape it while damp. Pat it back to its original dimensions and let it dry undisturbed.
Storing
Fold, never hang. A hanger puts all the weight on the shoulder stitches and the piece will slowly grow.
Bags keep their shape best stored stuffed with tissue.
Snags and repairs
If a stitch pulls, do not cut it. Ease the loop back through with a crochet hook or a blunt needle.
